Our Story

Gaylord Brooks Realty Co., Inc. was founded in 1957 by Mr. Gaylord Brooks who worked from his home in Glen Arm, Maryland selling real estate. Richard (Dick) Moore, then a high school teacher and lacrosse coach, worked for Mr. Brooks during the summer, eventually realizing that selling property and developing land could better serve his passion of helping others to achieve their goals. When Mr. Brooks retired, Dick took the reins and, over the years, built the company into what it is today – Maryland’s diverse and comprehensive land use group. As the real estate industry evolved the company affiliated with Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty - a strong national real estate brokerage with a technological edge.

The Team

Stephen R. Smith

Steve Smith is our President and is responsible for the land development operations of the company. He has been with us for over 30 years and has personally overseen the development of more than 50 projects. He is extensively involved in the industry, serving as a Life Director of the Maryland Building Industry Association, where he is a past recipient of the Developer of the Year award and also served as President of the Baltimore County Chapter. In addition, Steve has long served on the Board of Supervisors for the Baltimore County Soil Conservation District. An active and long-time sailor, Steve is also a Past President of the Board of the Downtown Sailing Center, located in downtown Baltimore.

Richard A. DiBerardo

Rick DiBerardo is our Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer. Having been with the company for over 30 years, his responsibilities include everything financial, from raising capital and obtaining bank loans for projects, preparing the annual tax returns for projects to annual billings for private utility companies and anything else falling under the role of accounting. In addition, Rick oversees the property management of several of the company’s commercial office buildings and, as a Registered Cemetarian, the company’s cemetery (another story in itself). Rick is also a licensed Real Estate Broker and a Certified Public Accountant. As a licensed real estate agent, Rick is part of the Gaylord Brooks Group of Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty, which has consistently been in their Chairman’s Circle.

Thomas R. Moore

Tom Moore is our Vice President of Marketing and Sales and his title is synonymous with his duties. Tom oversees the acquisition of our properties as well as positioning them properly in the market upon disposition. Tom is the leader of the Gaylord Brooks Group of Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty, which is a multifaceted team of highly experienced agents and brokers specializing in residential and commercial properties. In addition, he holds a Master’s degree in real estate development from Johns Hopkins and is an Associate Broker. He has been with GBRC for over 25 years. Tom is a past president and Trustee Emeritus of the Board of St. James Academy in Monkton.
